Decisions, Decisions: Should you get the Ford Escape or the Ford Explorer?

At Roush Ford, located in Columbus, OH we find that some shoppers are undecided when it comes to choosing between the Ford Escape small SUV and the Ford Explorer midsize SUV.  These SUVS are excellent in their own right, but today we'll help you decide which one is the best fit for you, your budget, and your lifestyle.

Seating & Cargo

The midsize SUV Explorer can fit seven passengers, and with all seats up there is 21 cubic feet of space. With the third-row down there is 43.9 cubic feet and with all the back seats flat there's 81.7 cubic feet. With all seats up, there is 34 cubic feet in the Escape and 68 cubic feet with the back seats flat, and the Escape is pretty spacious in its small SUV segment. To make loading cargo easier, Explorer shoppers can get power-assist settings on the second-row seat and PowerFold® on the third-row, which are technologies you cannot get on the Escape.

The Explorer is the obvious pick if you need all seven seats to get around Hilliard. If you want to have all rows up most of the time and don't need the extra seats, then the Escape technically has more usable cargo space.

Interior & Exterior Style

There is no shame in admitting you've picked one car over another because of aesthetics. The Escape has a look that is more 'non-descript', which many drivers appreciate. On the flip side, the Explorer isn't something you could hide in the Dublin, OH scenery. It has a commanding presence and is more aggressive. The Explorer's dash layout also feels more expansive and luxe than the Escape's cabin. One isn't better than the other, though; it just comes down to personal taste.

To keep the costs low on the Escape, the most refined seats you can get are leather and cloth trimmed, and they are very nice looking. If you're a big fan of leather, the Explorer has more options, including regular leather, leather seats with perforated inserts, and premium leather. You'll also notice fancier stitching and upholstery patterns on the Explorer.

Amenities & Technologies

The Escape and Explorer have comparable amenities. For example, they both can have SYNC® 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, you can make roofs exciting with large dual-pane or panoramic Vista® roofs, there are oodles of packages to choose from that add style, safety, and convenience, and both can get a hands-free liftgate to use after a day of shopping in Grove City.

A few differences: the Explorer can upgrade and get a rear-seat entertainment, as well as Active Motion® seats with a massage setting. The Escape doesn't. That said, while the Explorer might present all the amenities in a slightly more refined way, there isn't a stark difference between what you can get with either model, except for a few premium creature comforts.

Price & Fuel

Price matters to most, and shoppers can expect to find these approximate cost ranges when looking for an Escape or Explorer to buy or lease. Naturally, the Explorer is going to cost more than the Escape, due to its size and placement in the trim-level lineup, but now you'll have an idea of the cost differences.

Along with purchasing costs, fuel prices are also important to consider. The Escape and Explorer both have a three-engine lineup, and you may be surprised to learn that combined estimated fuel ratings for each are within 5 MPG! Play around with a fuel calculator to see how your driving factors into the fuel costs; you might be surprised that an Explorer won't cost you that much more at the pump than the Escape!

Just like with the total vehicle costs, we expect the Escape to have smaller engine output numbers, but again we'll give you an idea of the performance for both.

The Ford Escape and Ford Explorer are in different segments, but it's still a good idea to see how the two compare, especially if you're on the fence. If you need more seats and performance, the Explorer is a great choice, but if you can get away with five-passenger seating and don't need to tow heavy, the Escape might be a better choice for your lifestyle and wallet. If you're still on the fence, stop into our dealership to check them both out and go over financing options to see how the prices play out.
